The Heart of a Lion

Today we solute Robert Smalls because he displayed a leadership of boldness, imagination and courage.

What situation have you been in that required you to lead in a courageous way? Have you ever been afraid to lead? If you are like many CEOs, you have probably experienced both scenarios. Leadership cane an emotional roller coaster but it’s those leaders who embrace it and use it to fuel their adrenaline will be able to battle the fear, face it head on and overcome it as they move forward.

Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.

For example, courage is not the absence of fear but rather the commitment of one to overcome it. We often thing a leader who is bold and courageous does not feel the presence of fear, but that that couldn't be farther from the truth.

A true leader will need courage in an effort to build a culture of strong, imaginative and bold leaders. Courageous leadership requires to have the heart of a lion so in times when you need rise up and ascend beyond the challenges they face, you will gain the respect and following of the masses onward. Setting the stage for mobilizing a winning culture is an investment in yourself that will pay off time after time. When you look to lead other people , you must start with transforming yourself and put yourself in situations where you will inherit moments of using courage to overcome fear and Robert Small did just that.

Here are 3 helpful tips for creating a culture of bold and courageous leaders:

  1. Run toward the storms.  Encourage your teams to face challenges head-on by grabbing the bull by the horns to work towards a solution. Solutions are never solved on the level they were created. Identify the root of the problem, assemble the right resources, deploy a strategy and execution, measure the results and pivot accordingly.

  2. Set Bolder expectations. Never be comfortable with a culture that chooses the path of least resistance or playing life safe. Mobilize your employees to chase the path of excellence by defining expectations above and beyond what's easily attained to stretch the imagination of your teams.

  3. Elevate Their Mindset.  As a leader you will need to improve your performance first in order to enhance your approach to improving the team mindset.  You can do this through a set of core practices that guides your learning path towards excellence. Decide on what those core practices are need to be achieve your goals each year, provide a compelling vision of why and work towards improving your mindset.
